CHUI CHOO SIN
徐祖燊

Mr Chui Choo Sin (b. 1924) is a past vice Chairman of  The Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore (新加坡书法家协会) and a senior judge at calligraphy competitions. He is regularly being invited by the Singapore government to calligraph nice verses to present as gifts to visiting foreign dignitaries.

Mr Chui was born in Guangdong province, China, where he received a traditional Chinese education and learned Chinese calligraphy from the age of 5.  At 10 years old, he migrated to Singapore with his family and has lived here since.

In his youth, Mr Chui received Chinese calligraphy training from several eminent teachers of that generation. He studied in Chung Cheng High School (Main), which was the cradle of many prominent local artists, from 1945 to 1948. In 1949, he went to Guangzhou to further his studies, before progressing to the newly founded New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大学新亚书院). After completing his studies, Mr Chui returned to Singapore in 1952 and worked in the family’s Traditional Chinese Medicine business for the next few decades.

There are 5 major styles of Chinese calligraphy. Mr Chui specializes in the Standard Style (楷书), where each stroke is clear and separate, and each character is squarish in structure. This style ensures the characters are easily readable and is particularly suitable for writing traditional Chinese couplets (对联) and important signage.

Despite his eminent position in the Chinese calligraphy fraternity, Mr Chui has only held 2 exhibitions: in 1998 and 2012. His works are mostly held by private collectors and rarely available in the market.

Perhaps the greatest honor for Mr Chui came in 2004 when the Sun-Moon Canyon National Park in Heilongjiang (黑龙江日月峡国家森林公园), China, built a gallery in his name. The environmentally friendly gallery, built almost entirely of wood to blend in with the park, has 50 pieces of his calligraphy carved in wood panels on display.  He was also conferred an Honorary Chancellor title by the Sun-Moon Canyon Chinese Painting College.
