The inspiring verse 澹泊明志 寜静致远 means to achieve big goals, our minds must be calm and we must stay focused on the right methods to achieve them, without being distracted by fame, fortune or other external disturbances.

The verse was first expressed by Liu An 刘安 (BC 170 – BC 122), a grandson of the founding Emperor (刘邦) of the Han Dynasty in a manual he wrote.

During the Three Kingdoms Warring States period, Zhu Geliang 诸葛亮 (AD 181- AD 234) of Shu State (蜀国) was an outstanding military strategist and premier. He was well versed in military strategies and astrology. He thus helped leader Liu Bei (刘备) and his trusted generals Guan Yu (关羽) and Zhang Fei (张飞) win many battles. In one of his numerous letters to his young son, Zhu Geliang quoted this verse, hoping to impart its values and wisdom to the child.
